My first 3o days challenge. I was very excited when I started it and still am. An easy task for the start: Reusing Little M’s bathwater. Stop pouring it just down the drain.
All that his bathwater contains of is water and biodegradable body wash. Ok, and maybe sometimes a little bit of wee, but that is biodegradable too, isn’t it? So all good to find great purposes to reuse this water for. And there are many of them and I am sure more to come. Some examples:
- watering the plants
- rinsing the nappy bucket
- cleaning dirty clothes before they go in the washing machine
- washing Little M’s wipes
- I even enjoyed a footbath with that water one night and loved it.
My first 30 days challenge was easier than I thought. I quickly came up with different ways of making use of the water and I enjoyed the feeling of having done something new and meaningful to me. Reusing Little M’s bathwater really makes sense and I am sure that I will continue doing it.
Looking forward to my next task.

P.S. Don’t know what my 30 days challenge is? Read my first “30 days challenge” post to find out.
I too often think that my life is so busy that I can’t find the time to do something new or different, something I always wanted to do or just something I would like to try. Especially with my passion for a sustainable life I struggle keeping pace with the inspirations that people “through” at me (in a positive sense).
I found this fantastic TED talk from Matt Cutts: ‘Try something new for 30 days’ (actually Big N found it for me, I just listened to it), that gave me an easy answer to my questions of “How?” and “When?”. Just do it. Do it now. Do it for 30 days. See what happens.
Listen to it yourself, it is 3 minutes and something long and might inspire you too:
I started my own little 30 days challenges. Every now and then I will do something different for 30 days. It will be around the topic of trying to be a sustainble mum and reducing my impact on the environment. I am curious if these 30 days will change my view on how to get things done. Or let’s say started in the first place.
Every parent of kids 0 – 4,5,6 years … (when do they stop growing?) have the same problem. We can’t buy clothes as quickly as the kids grow out of them. Especially when they are really small. An American mum-to-be had the perfect idea, she started “Plum“, an online venture for baby clothes delivery. This is how it works: you order baby clothes of your favorite brand online, get them delivered to your door-step and send them back when they get too small.
What an idea. You save on money, you safe on space in the wardrobe, you safe on time running around the shops getting new clothes and you help the environment by not buying new products all the time.
This works perfectly for babies as they literally grow out of their clothes every 3 months. But it can even work for bigger kids. Little M is 1,5 and I know that he won’t wear the same shirts and trousers next year unless the short and tight style comes into kids fashion.
Anyone interested in setting this idea up in Australia? I have a few clothes to contribute.
I was inspired by a phone conversation this morning to have another post on cloth nappies. I was after a legal advice and the person on the other line took the time to have a quick chat with me. Nice by the way to not rush through a phone consultation for a change. Don’t ask me how we managed to get to the topic of cloth nappies but we did and she told me that she had a 1 year old and started on cloth nappies but gave up after a few months because it was all too hard. For all the mums and dads and uncles and aunts and everyone else who is sometimes printing pages of websites.
This cool website www.printfriendly.com helps you print just the part of a page you really need. They show you a preview of the print layout and you can delete everything, really everything, you don’t need. Forget about the unnecessary navigation, annoying ads and anything else you don’t need on your printout. Limit your print page to the information you really want and save ink and paper.
How often did I print several pages for a little bit of information from the internet just because the print layout was setup so badly?
So next time I want to print this voucher, that map, the recipe, these nursing rhymes or anything else from a website I definitely check it on www.printfriendly.com first.
But before hitting the print button I will rethink if I need to print at all. Save paper, save our forests!
